  • Teams from Suncoast played softball on Saturday to raise funds for Casting for the Kids—a charity that helps families pay bills during treatments. Founder Ben Shroyer said the game exceeded its goal to assist Landon, a 12-year-old who traveled to Philadelphia for treatment—support that eased financial stress.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Three Arcadia residents were scared on Friday when Reginald Hundson—a convicted felon barred from having guns—opened fire, and police quickly secured the scene and charged him with three counts of attempted murder.  ABC 7
  • A Sarasota college student was detained by ICE in Texas after being arrested for driving without a license on May 21, and her family—a group that described her as hardworking—pleaded for her return as her attorney will ask for bond at a hearing next week while a protest is planned for June 14.  FOX 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Venice celebrated the opening of a new museum for the 99-year-old fire engine Old Betsy — a cherished part of city history that served from 1926 to 1947. Caretakers Earl and Karen Midlam led the $550,000 project with donations and city funds to give the fire engine a permanent home on the Venice Cultural Campus.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Residents attended the annual arts fair in St Armands Circle this past Saturday—local artists and businesses, including a hand-made jewelry seller from Puerto Rico, attracted visitors from across the Suncoast and California—while photographer Joe Haxby said the event offered unique sights in perfect weather.  ABC 7

  • Hay bales were put along Anna Maria Island beaches to keep sea turtles safe during summer nesting season—residents are asked to leave the bales in place and turn off lights after 8 p.m.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital previewed its new 11,000-square-foot emergency room in Venice last Friday—featuring local artwork and staff—and it will open later in June after final inspections to offer full 24/7 care for adults and children.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
