Christ Church of Longboat Key gave a $40,000 grant on May 18 to Elks Feeding Empty Little Tummies so they can build a new meal-packing facility — a project estimated at about $54,000 — once county permit approval is secured.

The nonprofit will use the facility to serve meals to students in need.

The Squeaky Wheel Fringe festival is now underway from June 3-10 at the Jane B.

Cook Theatre, featuring a range of uncensored performances in drama, dance, and comedy. Founder Megan Radish expects the festival to build on last year's success—marked by a 20% ticket growth—with a robust lineup and increased local visibility.

After hurricanes Helene and Milton left debris, downed trees, and damaged homes on Manasota Key, a temporary road fix was planned but is now delayed because sea turtle nests block work until 60 days after the last nest appears, which may push repairs to October—residents worry about having only one safe exit via the north bridge. Residents have faced repeated challenges with road washouts as the key remains in a state of disrepair.

Ella Dodge, a Lakewood Ranch High School graduate, played second base and batted third for the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City before the season ended.

The team will return next season to finish their unfinished business — a goal they plan to pursue with the same passion that marked this season.
