  • At a Feb. 5 meeting in Longboat Key, the Kiwanis Club presented a record-breaking $123,900 check to the Children's Guardian Fund from its Lawn Party fundraiser. The donation — boosted by raffle winnings donated by Frank and Katherine Martucci — surpassed previous totals and will help support children in the foster care system.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Feb. 9, the New College Foundation received a $1 million gift from Dr. Michael C. and Ling Z. Markovitz — funding the Socratic Stage that will host debates, forums, and lectures to promote civil discourse and classical learning on campus.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two invasive termite species (Asian and Formosan subterranean termites) are spreading north faster than expected and could put Florida homes at risk by mid‑century, according to a University of Florida study from Jan. 24.   • Sarasota County commissioners will vote at 9 a.m. today on a proposal to purchase the 49-acre former Gulf Gate Golf Course land + neighbors plan to share their views during public comment at the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center Chambers.  FOX 13
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared Presidents Day as an extra state holiday to mark America’s 250th anniversary — state offices, schools, banks and post offices will close on Monday, Feb. 16.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Stu Cook, a bassist from Creedence Clearwater Revival, sold his waterfront home near Siesta Key for nearly $5 million more than its purchase price to Myron Robbins of Buffalo Management Group.
