CULTURE NEWS

  • Palmetto High alum Raymond Klein Jr. (84) repainted the gym tiger mural using his original brushes and oil from 1959, and he completed the 4x6 version in October to have it installed in the school foyer.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Small businesses and nonprofits in Sarasota and 16 other Florida counties that lost money from Hurricane Milton last year can apply for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans up to $2 million until Jan. 22 to cover payroll and fixed debts. Loans offer low interest with payments deferred 12 months.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarasota County Schools faced a $25 million shortfall last year from declining enrollment, COVID funding losses, and voucher issues; the district now plans creative measures to counter controversial charter policies. Community members are organizing to support school board candidates ahead of votes on Aug. 18 and Nov. 3.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Florida Lotto drawing on Saturday, Dec. 27 left its jackpot at $10.25 million after no winning ticket was found on Christmas Eve. The next drawing will be on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and players must claim prizes within 180 days.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
