Today, a local nonprofit is donating real Christmas trees to families in need in Sarasota as part of its Thanks for Giving Trees event, marking its 200th tree giveaway and 1,000th overall since 2017 in honor of Joshua Morris's legacy (a cherished family tradition).

On Dec. 6, the annual Holiday Parade on Main Street celebrated community spirit by featuring floats from local organizations, schools, and clubs along with performers showing off water skiing & circus arts skills.

Santa Claus made a special appearance as the event ended.

Venice resident Tanya Unnerstall is launching a holiday backpack drive for homeless high school students on the Suncoast.

Backpacks filled with canned goods, toiletries, and gift cards will be delivered Dec. 15 to 12 schools — over 200 students have benefited in the last two years.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is hosting its 9th annual Holiday Toy Drive until Dec.

15 at two donation locations. Sheriff Kurt Hoffman said donated unwrapped toys and gift cards will benefit three local charities that support children in need.

At the Lakewood Ranch Blues Fest held on Saturday at Waterside Park, seven blues bands played for an estimated 800 fans, and locals danced to a mix of soul, rock, and Chicago blues + a lively spirit.

Event organizers said the festival united the community with its engaging music and energy.

Local animal shelters + rescue groups in Sarasota are offering a range of pets for adoption, inviting residents to find a new furry friend.
