- ➤ 31-year-old Elizabeth 'Izzy' Sauceda received a kidney transplant after a five-year wait and faced an eviction notice with her mother until the Season of Sharing program paid $2,445 in back rent—keeping them from homelessness in Sarasota. - ➤ Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe will present a reimagined version of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity that blends gospel music with new choreography and Afrocentric designs—an innovative celebration of Black heritage for Sarasota this holiday season. Observer
- ➤ Former Rockette Jennifer Jones, the first African American Rockette, will speak at the Quotable Series talk at the Sarasota Art Museum on December 6 at 1 p.m. She will share her journey from breaking barriers in 1987 to her 15 years as a Rockette — a path that opened doors for other Black dancers. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sarasota County stormwater workers and contractors have prepared work zones for dredging Phillippi Creek, which will begin this month and last about six months—supported by $16 million—while the West Coast Inland Navigation District gets ready to dredge a stretch from the creek's mouth to 2,000 feet upstream of U.S. 41. - ➤ Social Security retirement benefits will be paid on Dec. 10, Dec. 17 and Dec. 24 while SSI recipients got their December check on Dec. 1 and will receive the January payment on Dec. 31 — the holiday change shifts the usual schedule.
