Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Venice single dad Chuck Maldonado faced eviction when a nonprofit he contacted failed to process his paperwork in time and he had to quickly move his daughter Ella’s belongings. With help from Season of Sharing—whose funds covered his first month’s rent—he secured a lease on a larger house to provide a stable home during a slow work period.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota National Cemetery and Bay Pines National Cemetery are falling short of their sponsorship goals for Wreaths Across America Day on December 13—Bay Pines has only 13% of the 35,000 needed wreaths while Sarasota is less than halfway funded. Organizers say a last-minute surge in sponsors must boost the numbers before the Sunday deadline to ensure every veteran is honored.  FOX 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation announced its Six to Save 2025 list, which names six key historic sites in and near downtown Sarasota including Luke Wood Park and the Blackburn Point Swing Bridge. The group hopes the list will spur discussion among local leaders and developers and encourage creative ways to protect these landmarks—steps aimed at preserving Sarasota’s unique heritage.  Observer
  • Sarasota’s PINC Experience will return on December 11 at the Sarasota Opera House with 11 global speakers sharing ideas on people, ideas, nature and community and tickets for $300 available until December 3. After the main event, an exclusive poolside afterparty and intimate dinner on December 12—plus a free PINCfest on December 13—will offer locals three new ways to celebrate and connect.  Sarasota Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Longboat Key leaders are searching for 800,000 cubic yards of quality sand for a beach renourishment project scheduled for 2028 after hurricanes removed sand and flattened dunes. They will collect sand samples from the Gulf floor—meeting strict environmental rules—while urging property owners to rebuild dunes for better storm protection.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Manatee and Sarasota counties are starting dozens of projects to improve pedestrian safety after two fatal crashes in Manatee County raised concerns. Metropolitan Planning Organization leader David Hutchinson said the projects — including new crosswalk sensors and widened sidewalks — will use Florida Department of Transportation funds to help lower crash rates.  ABC 7
  • Congressman Greg Steube has asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to include $100 million in future funding to repair Venice’s South Jetty, which was heavily damaged by hurricanes Helene and Milton—he said that reopening the jetty will help local boating and recreation.  FOX 13
