  • Kuro Sushi on Main Street at Lakewood Ranch opened on November 20 with a grand opening that replaced a ribbon-cutting with a tuna-cutting ceremony featuring a 180-pound blue fin tuna—an event that showcased its unique, family-style cooking—bringing a warm local flavor to the celebration.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote Marine Institute recorded a record number of sea turtle nests from Longboat Key to Venice in 2025 — 5,732 nests compared to 4,369 last year — and also documented 716 disorientations that misdirect hatchlings. Researchers urge residents to reduce beachfront lights and remove outdoor furniture at night to protect the turtles.  Observer

  • Crews are repairing the seawall, sidewalks and landscaping at Whitaker Gateway Park today—city officials say work will start next week at Bayfront Park with new sidewalks, shoreline restoration and street sign fixes; residents can track progress on 14 active restoration projects. The City of Sarasota continues its efforts to restore park infrastructure damaged by hurricanes.  ABC 7

  • Dee Dee—a three-year-old pit mix rescued from euthanization—is now available for adoption after local animal advocates featured her during Friday's Pet of the Week segment.
