  • Jennyce Gonzalez, a North Port mom, feared living in her car as high rents and rising bills made it hard to keep her family housed until Season of Sharing helped cover her first month’s rent and security deposit—letting her secure a new apartment and avoid eviction.   • Sarasota parishioners celebrated Rev. Fausto Stampiglia’s 65th year as a priest on November 14 at Michael’s on East. The 90-year-old retired priest—renowned for reviving St. Martha Catholic Church and its schools—was honored by many longtime parishioners who recalled his comforting support during challenging times.  Observer
  • The Ms. Sun City Center pageant returned after 18 years in Sun City Center when ten senior women showcased their talents and community spirit—Laurie Klimeczko crowned Joanne Kerr as the new titleholder. The event celebrated the beauty and contributions of retired volunteers and revived a cherished tradition in the community.  FOX 13

  • Florida shoppers can get kitchen staples for Thanksgiving by visiting open stores such as Bravo Supermarkets open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., The Fresh Market open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sprouts open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Whole Foods open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; many CVS and select 24-hour Walgreens will run on shortened hours—chains like Aldi, BJ's, Costco, Publix, Sam's Club, Target, Trader Joe's and Winn-Dixie will be closed.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Allegiant Air began service from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to Toledo Express Airport on November 20, operating up to two weekly nonstop flights—adding to the 69 nonstops offered from SRQ and giving local passengers a new option to visit Toledo.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation released its 2025 Six to Save list that names six historic sites, including the J.B. Turner House on Fruitville Road, facing demolition threats amid rapid redevelopment. SAHP said rising costs and new state rules have increased vulnerabilities—prompting calls for preservation efforts.  Sarasota Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Florida Public Service Commission approved FPL’s rate hike request, meaning customers will pay about $2.50 more each month starting next year—Commissioner Gary Clark said that base rate increases in 2026 and extra funding in 2027 for solar and battery projects will keep bills higher until 2029.  Z105

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation program recorded a record 5,735 sea turtle nests along 35 miles of Sarasota beaches this nesting season, with loggerhead turtles making up 5,384 of the nests and observers noting 716 instances of disorientation due to bright lights. Experts urge residents and visitors to turn off extra lights near beaches (a simple measure to help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A home in Siesta Bayside topped the week’s real estate sales when 4544 Woodside Road LLC sold the property to Christopher Pavlovski for $4.7 million — the highest sale from November 3rd to November 7th. Other properties in Sarasota, Osprey and Nokomis also sold at notable prices.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • In mid-September, senior members of the Sarasota Model Yacht Club gathered at Green Parrot Lake in Benderson Park to race their one meter toy boats following strict radio controlled yacht rules — the lively races tested skill and fostered friendly competition. The club, with about 80 members and higher attendance during snowbird season, values fair play and welcomes newcomers.  Observer
