COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Sarasota County has launched its annual Red Kettle Campaign to support local residents by funding both holiday programs and year-round services that help prevent homelessness and provide essential gifts for children and seniors. Bell ringers will begin collecting donations the day after Thanksgiving at 46 locations—ensuring all funds remain within the community.  ABC 7
  • Sisterhood for Good held its 6th annual Designer Bag Bingo event at the Grove in Lakewood Ranch earlier this month, drawing nearly 300 guests who played games to win luxury purses in support of local nonprofits. The event raised over $50,000 for the 2026 Annual Grants Program + nine guests won designer bags.  ABC 7
  • Baby Basics of Sarasota County hosted its annual fundraiser at the Sarasota Yacht Club and drew a record crowd of 270 guests—attendees enjoyed circus decor, a live clown, a silent auction, a raffle, and a fashion show to support low-income families with 160 babies.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hermitage Artist Retreat received over $300,000 in grants for operations, storm recovery, artist residencies, and arts education programs—funds that are set to expand local cultural opportunities. The grants came from various donors—such as the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County—to support its creative initiatives.  Observer
  • After nearly a decade of planning, research and restoration, Gallery 12 has opened permanently at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art — displaying 201 pieces from the museum’s large Cypriot collection acquired in 1928. The exhibit shows sculptures, ceramics and jewelry with careful conservation and creative lighting that honors John Ringling’s vision — inviting visitors to experience nearly 3,000 years of history.  Observer

  • Tourist spending in Sarasota County dropped by $9.5 million since September 2024 and visitor numbers declined by over 14,000—experts point to lingering hurricane fears and economic uncertainty, while residents are invited to share their thoughts in a poll.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bridget Ziegler was elected as Sarasota School Board Chair on Nov. 18 — she was endorsed by Governor Ron DeSantis and said the board will focus on protecting taxpayers, backing teachers, and supporting families to ensure every student gets a quality education.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital broke ground on its $507 million, 208-bed full-service hospital at the North Port Sumter Boulevard campus on November 8. The new campus—featuring a three-story medical office building—is set to open in 2028.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sophomore Madison Muller broke the course record in the FHSAA Class 4A Region 3 cross country championship on Nov. 15 by finishing the 5K in 16:50.4 with a lead of more than 25 seconds (earning her Sarasota Athlete of the Week honor). Riverview will compete in the 4A state championship at 9 a.m. on Nov. 22 in Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park.  Observer
