  • On October 6th, Officer Evedon answered a call about teens playing football near homes and joined the game after talking with their parents to ease tensions. His actions showed that policing goes beyond calls for service by connecting with the community.  ABC 7
  • All Star Children's Foundation will host its 3rd Annual Twinkle Ball, a black-tie gala, on November 12 at 6:00 p.m. at The Ora in Sarasota to mark its five-year milestone of building brighter futures for children in foster care — the event will feature a gourmet dinner and inspiring stories, with guest speaker Peter Mutabazi set to share his journey from street child to global advocate.  Sarasota Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Sarasota group from Asolo Rep won second prize at Bette Midler’s Hulaween fundraiser in New York City on Oct 24 — they returned home to resume rehearsals for the upcoming production of Come From Away opening Nov 15.  Observer
  • Every Saturday and Sunday in November, the Sarasota Medieval Fair at Mallaranny Farms offers live shows, vendors and food that let visitors step into a medieval world — the event features costume contests and interactive performances that bring history and fantasy to life.  Observer
  • Several events are planned across the Suncoast this weekend; the Living Arts Festival runs today and tomorrow on North Palm Avenue and the 19th annual Hungarian Festival offers food, live music and kid games while the Florida Inline Skating Marathon starts at 8 a.m. and Santa's Grand Arrival Parade with an after party concert begins at 6:30 p.m. today. Weather is expected to be sunny with near 80 degrees today and a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local education officials met November 7 to discuss the Schools of Hope Program and its proposed charter school takeover—participants reviewed potential impacts and next steps.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Dec. 1, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is launching its annual toy drive to collect new, unwrapped toys and gift cards for Teen Court, the All Star Children's Foundation, the Florida Statewide Guardian ad Litem Office, and other groups. Donations can be made daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the headquarters — 6010 Cattleridge Blvd — or on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the South County Office in Venice, and items may also be ordered from the Sheriff's Office Amazon Wishlist.  Observer
