CULTURE NEWS

  • The Florida International Air Show lost its military headliners — the Blue Angels, F-16 Viper demo, and Heritage Flight teams — because the government shutdown forced their cancellation, but organizers have booked a top civilian lineup including a historic display by three MIG-17 jets flying in formation. • Architecture Sarasota will host its 12th annual MOD Weekend—Moderns That Matter: Sarasota 100 from November 11 to 14 to showcase 100 key buildings that tell Sarasota’s design story. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sarasota Tiger Bay Club will host a forum on schools issues on Nov. 6 at Michael’s On East featuring Superintendent Terry Connor, headmaster Josh Longenecker, and other education leaders to discuss charter schools, voucher programs, and local budget cuts—an event that aims to shed light on current challenges in education. • Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky announced at Sarasota’s Westin Hotel on Oct. 22 that 2.7 million Progressive customers will receive rebates in 2026 totaling about $1 billion. The average rebate—estimated at roughly $300—will depend on each policyholder’s earned premium from 2025.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota County government launched a new webpage to update residents on the Phillippi Creek dredging project from Tuttle Avenue to Little Sarasota Bay. The site shows videos and maps with details about WCIND managing the lower section and county funding the upper portion at a cost of $16 million—efforts that follow severe flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.  Observer
