COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bernard Greenberg, a 100-year-old WWII codebreaker who intercepted Japanese radio messages, will serve as the grand marshal for the Tribute to Heroes Parade on Nov. 9 in Lakewood Ranch — a nod to his wartime service — and will lead the event.  Observer
  • The Lakewood Ranch YMCA is more than a gym, offering Spanish lessons, art classes, drop-off care, and sports programs along with swim and fitness services. The center plans to add programs as needed—using scholarships and flexible scheduling to help everyone stay active.  Observer
  • In early September, the Mighty Siesta Key Kiwanis Club met at Gecko’s Grill & Pub to plan programs that support local children through its Read, Learn, Dream Sarasota literacy initiative and Holiday Heroes gift program. Formed about 10 years ago from a merger of two clubs—now with 31 members—the group works to shield children from poverty and teams with Meals on Wheels and local schools.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longboat Key resident Wilma Davidson—an 82-year-old writer, educator, and former pilot—built a storied career by writing three books, teaching at USF Sarasota-Manatee for 10 years, and running her own consulting firm that took her abroad. She now leads the local branch of the National League of American Pen Women and works on new projects like a children’s book, Supercat Splat Splat.  Observer
  • Sarasota Opera will stage Mozart's Così fan tutte on Oct. 31 after a two-year pause in full-scale fall productions—this full return follows recent hurricane repairs and kicks off the company's 67th season as it prepares for a centennial celebration at the Opera House next year.  Observer
  • The Christmas Carol Trolley offers a 75-minute music and light tour through downtown Sarasota from December 1-23, leaving from Discover Sarasota Tours at 1826 4th Street with showtimes at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Families can enjoy free parking—lap babies ride free—and complimentary drinks from the tiki bar as the Trolley Troubadours lead festive caroling stops.  Sarasota Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lakewood Ranch Library will begin its second-floor buildout later this fall and is expected to be ready by April next year—its new flexible space will house study rooms and county offices. County library officials also announced projects like an expansion at Rocky Bluff and a custom bookmobile due in early 2026—helping to add vital library services across the area.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Rotary Club meeting on Oct. 21, Kaylee Zavela was honored with a certificate of appreciation for her work on hurricane recovery and community projects in Longboat Key. She said she has applied for $38 million in grants, secured $7.7 million so far, and will continue to seek more funding to improve the town.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital has grown from a small wooden lean-to to a modern facility that uses advanced technology for patient care. Historian Jeff LaHurd documented its 100-year journey (tracing the hospital's evolution from early days to now) in a detailed new feature.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Between Oct. 13 and Oct. 17, a condominium at L'Ambiance at Longboat Key Club sold for $10.25 million, topping residential real estate sales in Longboat, Lido, St. Armands and Bird Key. Other transactions included an $8.83 million home in Sarasota and several multi-million-dollar deals, showing strong market activity in the area.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dru Hershberger, a freshman swimmer for Sarasota Christian, won gold on Oct. 25 when she set a personal best of 5:09.97 in the 500-meter freestyle at the FHSAA Class 1A District 8 championship—she also placed fourth in the 200-meter freestyle while competing for Sarasota Sharks and earned recognition as Sarasota Athlete of the Week.  Observer
  • The USA TODAY Florida high school football poll shows eight teams holding their No. 1 spots for the third week in a row—Cardinal Mooney, St. Thomas Aquinas, Miami Northwestern and Chaminade-Madonna were all chosen unanimously. Blountstown gained first-place votes in the Rural class—three teams in Class 4A also earned votes as the season nears its end.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • High school soccer is back in Sarasota as teams begin practices ahead of the FHSAA season starting Nov. 3. Cardinal Mooney boys, Riverview girls and Sarasota Christian girls are using new players and experienced seniors to work toward winning games—each team plans to improve from last season.  Observer
