BUSINESS NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Police investigated an alleged threat over noise at Mary Dean Park after basketball players drew concerns from a nearby resident and caused city officials to remove the hoop—officials confirmed it was restored by 4 p.m. Thursday.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Sarasota County School District announced it would not relocate Suncoast Polytechnical High School to Brookside Middle School after parents and students voiced strong opposition at the Oct. 21 board meeting — the district will instead work on a plan to reimagine Brookside by creating a new magnet program for grades 6 to 8. This decision preserves SPHS’s close-knit setting and supports innovative learning opportunities for students.  ABC 7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Halloween 2025 in Sarasota will bring cool air as a strong cold front lowers temperatures to the low 70s in the afternoon and upper 50s in the morning, rather than the usual humid heat. Families planning trick-or-treating should expect clear skies and light northerly winds — creating a crisp, ideal setting for costumes.  ABC 7
  • The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Melissa will reach hurricane strength today and become a major hurricane tomorrow—staying well east of Florida. Forecasters are monitoring the storm closely to see if any outer bands might approach, and advise residents to stay alert—especially if shifts in its path occur.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. DeSantis said that Progressive will give $1 billion in rebates to Florida policyholders on Dec. 31—each customer with an active policy is expected to get about $300 automatically early in 2026. The rebates come from law changes that reduced costly lawsuits and helped lower insurance rates.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 2019, over 173,000 Florida patients lost access to home health care, and 37% in Representative Vern Buchanan’s area did not get the care promised—experts warn that a proposed 9% funding cut in 2026 will worsen care deserts and lead to more hospitalizations. Immediate action is needed to secure home-based care for those who rely on it.  Observer
  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital was ranked No.6 in Florida on Newsweek's Best In State 2025 list—making it the only Southwest Florida facility honored for three straight years. CEO David Verinder credited the ranking to the team’s dedication to quality care.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Sarasota County, D.R. Horton and the landowner’s trust returned to mediation after county commissioners rejected a settlement that would have let officials reconsider the slimmed-down housing proposal east of Interstate 75 near Celery Fields—changes include reducing 126 planned homes to 85 and bolstering flood mitigation. The mediation under the Florida Land Use and Environmental Dispute Resolution Act will reassess the revised plan and its impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.  Observer
