BUSINESS NEWS

  • Richard Gonzmart of the 1905 Family of Restaurants said the Buccaneer project on Longboat Key is still moving forward despite local reports that the plan was abandoned—he remains committed to the new restaurant even amid challenges from the pandemic and hurricane recovery.   • Chef Drew Adams became head chef at CW Prime inside the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort earlier this month after closing Adeline, and he said he will work with local farms to enhance the steak program.   • Carved Crafted Sandwiches will open on November 3 at Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch — the shop, owned by Mark and Carrie Botros with a family partner, will serve hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, and kids' items while the menu adapts to community feedback. The owners invite locals to join a social media contest by sharing their favorite sandwich for a chance to win a free daily sandwich for a year.  Observer

  • The Sarasota area hosts a wide range of concerts this week — including shows at Big Top Live, Oscura, Fogartyville, and Waypoint Bar & Grill — featuring acts in country, blues, reggae and alternative rock.   • Local parents are urged to discuss internet safety with their children as the Child Protection Center offers free online and in-person workshops in Sarasota County – the center’s new resource page includes safety tips and interactive quizzes. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters say tropical storm Melissa will strengthen quickly as conditions improve, and it may hit 130 mph winds with heavy rains that could cause serious floods and landslides in Jamaica and Haiti. Local reports show Sarasota will remain mostly dry today with a small craft advisory in effect through Sunday — boaters should use caution on choppy waters.  ABC 7

  • Today, the Herald-Tribune previewed high school football matchups in Sarasota and Manatee County—providing score predictions and highlighting key players as teams compete for playoff spots.   • Cardinal Mooney senior Kelsey Fisher was named Girls Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6—11 after receiving 47.9% of the vote and posting a team-high 10 kills in a 3—0 win over Riverview.   • Senior fullback Aengus Doody from Out-of-Door Academy was named Herald-Tribune Boys Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6-11 after scoring a key touchdown in a close win and earning 68.39% of the vote—he was chosen based on coach reports and school nominations.
