COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local leaders are urging Sarasota residents to help strengthen the Herald-Tribune as it marks 100 years of journalism—calling for ideas and partnerships to create a community dashboard that tracks local issues—and to support a trusted news source for future challenges.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • On October 19, the 25th annual Firehouse Chili Cook-off was held on Osprey Avenue between Hyde Park Street and Hillview Avenue—over a dozen firehouses from Sarasota, Cedar Hammock, Venice, Longboat Key, Englewood, North Port and the Sarasota Police Department competed for Best Firehouse Chili. The event featured live music, food, and beverages and raised funds for the Sarasota Firefighters Benevolent Fund.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Sarasota hosted ROCKtoberfest from Oct. 17 to Oct. 19, which featured free live music and local vendors (family-friendly fun along the Bayfront).  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mater Academy filed notices this month to co-locate its charter schools in five local campuses under the new Schools of Hope law, sparking concern among parents and educators about shared resources. Lawmakers have not given clear comments yet and school districts have 20 days to respond — uncertainty over details like shared cafeterias and school safety remains.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Gators won 23-21 by stopping Mississippi State with a key interception from their 6-foot-5 defensive lineman while UCF ended its three-year October losing streak with a 45-13 win that saw 255 rushing yards on Friday. The Miami Hurricanes lost 24-21 to Louisville after their quarterback threw four interceptions, and Florida State fell 20-13 to Stanford.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Manatee High will hold its Athletic Hall of Honor Banquet Thursday at 6 p.m. at Bradenton Country Club to honor state champions and past stars including Coach Joe Kinnan and former all-state athletes. The banquet will celebrate local sports achievements and coincide with the Annual PKD Invitational Golf Tournament on Oct 27 at Lakewood National Golf Club — an event to raise funds for kidney disease research.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
