- ➤ A Sarasota police officer rescued a frightened kitten that crawled into the wheel well of a stopped car on U.S. 301 as busy traffic made the route dangerous—she then turned the animal over to Sarasota County Animal Services for care. ABC 7
- ➤ Local animal responders rescued a daredevil kitty in Sarasota on Oct. 10 — the cat was found trapped high in a tree and is now safe. ABC 7
- ➤ The Gulf Coast Community Foundation launched a five-minute digital survey—called the 2025 Regional Scan—to gather local views on the region’s needs and strengths. The survey will close in late October, and its results will guide planning and decision-making for future community projects. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Sarasota’s Big Top Brewing faces lawsuits from lenders alleging it owes over $4.6 million in unpaid loans while all three of its locations remain open for business. The brewery disputes the claims—arguing it was overcharged on interest for undisbursed construction funds—and discussions for a resolution are underway for early next year. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Selby Gardens today opens The Orchid Show 2025: Rebecca Louise Law featuring an art installation of preserved plants and a display of living orchids at the historic Payne Mansion. - ➤ Education Foundation president Jennifer Vigne was honored at the ConnectED statewide conference in Orlando with the Jim McKenzie Consortium Champion Award for her decade of leadership, and the ASALH Manasota Branch will launch its fourth Freedom School season on Oct. 18 at Girls Inc. in Sarasota. The Florida Climate Conference features Dr. Pam Soltis on Nov. 13 at USF Sarasota-Manatee, while today local events include the Bradenton Beach Sundown Get Down street party and a YMCA mental health program for youth, with later events such as the Wellen Park Wine Festival on Nov. 14—15 and a Trinity Presbyterian Church benefit concert on Nov. 16. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Suncoast Waterkeeper filed a notice of intent to sue U.S. Recycling on Oct. 3 for breaking the Clean Water Act by letting polluted stormwater flow into Hog Creek and Sarasota Bay—group tests showed high pollutant levels and the company has 60 days to fix the issue before a lawsuit is filed. - ➤ High school football in Sarasota and Manatee counties concluded on Friday, Oct. 10—teams pursued playoff spots in FHSAA and SSAA games—with scores and key plays reported all night as the season moved into its second weekend. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ The Florida High School Athletic Association released final volleyball rankings and district tournament seedings on Oct 10 to set the stage for high school contests across Sarasota and Manatee areas.
