  • Local Jewish leaders in Sarasota recalled the October 7 attack on Israel and are preparing a remembrance event for this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Moganroth Event Center—featuring former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant—while they hope current peace talks will soon secure the release of the remaining hostages.  FOX 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church is hosting a 100 Little Paintings exhibit by local artist Allan Cumming to help fund the final phase of hurricane rebuilding at its sister church on Siesta Key—each oil painting is offered for $60.  Observer
  • A series of local arts and entertainment events—ranging from gallery openings and live concerts to film nights, plays and festivals—will provide cultural experiences from Oct. 9 to 16 in Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch and Longboat.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Perlman Music Program Suncoast announced its winter residency schedule in Sarasota for classical string musicians ages 14 to 20—students will learn from Itzhak Perlman and other faculty while the public can enjoy free rehearsals, recitals and masterclasses. The program includes events from November 13 this year through May 4, 2026—highlighting the Super Strings concert on January 5 and a celebration concert with a gala dinner on January 9, 2026.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Last Friday, political and civic leaders and major donors gathered for a ribbon cutting at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s new Science Education Aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park—an event celebrating years of planning to ease access for families and students. The 146000 square foot facility opens today and will feature exhibits of sharks, rays, manatees, otters and penguins while hosting labs that serve over 70,000 students annually.  Sarasota Magazine

  • Pelicans near the Skyway Bridge fishing piers are injured daily by fishing lines—local rescue groups work to save the birds and advise safer fishing practices.  ABC Action News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Senior golfer Evan Booth had a career day at the TwinEagles Club (Naples) as he placed third with a five-under-par finish at the South Florida PGA West Coast High School Championship, earning him the Sarasota Athlete of the Week title. He finished one stroke ahead of junior Charlie Woods in a 16-team tournament.  Observer
  • High school boys golf at the Donald Ross Tri-County Championship ended in a tie between Saint Stephen's and Sarasota, with the Falcons winning a playoff at Sara Bay Country Club—Eddie Gau led as medalist while teams from Lakewood Ranch and Parrish also posted strong scores. In girls golf, Parrish won the title by eight strokes and Lakewood Ranch's Willda Kuang secured the individual win as teams from Manatee and Sarasota competed in the event from Oct. 6-11.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
