Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 6th of October.

  • The Lakewood Ranch Anglers Club held a record youth fishing tournament on Oct. 4 at Lake Uihlein where 92 kids competed, including four in the age group of ten to fourteen who tied for third and will each receive a trophy—volunteer rangers and Premier Tackle measured the catches and guided beginners. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Federal Reserve’s quarter-point cut—its first since December—helped lower Florida mortgage rates to their lowest since October and boosted mortgage applications by nearly 30% with refinancing rising 60%. Economists say further Fed cuts before year-end could spur more home sales along the Gulf Coast as borrowing costs drop further.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sydney Suppa, the athletic trainer at Lakewood Ranch High, saved volunteer coach Jerry Cable during a game at Parrish when a player collision left him unresponsive—she was honored by Manatee County Schools with a Life Saver Award for her quick action.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota Schools are considering closing Wilkinson Elementary and moving its roughly 400 students to other schools to keep a charter operator from using its empty space under a new Florida law. More than 20 local schools have lost students for years — causing parents to protest and urging the district to find new ways to protect public education.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Adagio condo project in downtown Sarasota—planned with 172 units and retail space in two towers—was denied approval by the Development Review Committee because its plans did not fully address zoning, water utilities, tree protections, neighborhood planning, and traffic concurrency. The developers must submit revised site plans and consider a community workshop to resolve concerns during a future meeting.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
