CULTURE NEWS

  • Wonderball 2025 opened its doors at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4 at The Sailor Circus Arena with electronic dance music shows by R3HAB, Peter DiCaro and AU-GUST. The one-night fundraiser used a Graffiti Color Explosion theme and benefited youth education programs run by the Circus Arts Conservatory.  ABC 7
  • A stretch of Clearwater’s waterfront trail is being renamed the Hulk Hogan Trail to honor the late wrestling star whose home was Clearwater. Gov. DeSantis said the 2-mile section will feature workout stations in Hogan’s signature red and yellow colors—helping residents and visitors remember his legacy.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents in Sarasota are protesting the proposed closure of Wilkinson Elementary—Florida’s only STEM-certified school—as district leaders plan to enforce a state law on underutilized schools. They argue that the school’s small classes, community food pantry and welcoming environment are key to neighborhood support and urge legislators to change the law.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manatee County is still working to secure a community center for the north end of Longboat Key—after several property deals fell through—and plans to renovate the Tingley Library building on Bradenton Beach as a temporary venue while a suitable new location is found.  Observer
  • Between December 2024 and September 2025, the Sarasota Police Department used a $115,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation to make nearly 900 traffic stops that resulted in 1,100 violations including speeding, lane changes, cellphone use in school zones, driving under the influence, suspended licenses, unregistered vehicles and seat belt offenses—officers are now applying for another traffic safety grant for 2025-26.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Halflants—Pichette has proposed a seven-story, 24-unit residential building at the corner of Seventh Street and Cohen Way in the Rosemary District that will replace an existing multifamily building with a public park, and the plan was reviewed by the Development Review Committee on Oct 1. The project covers 1.12 acres, will keep parking inside, and is set to resubmit revised details to address remaining comments including the requested administrative variance for trash carts.  Observer

  • The Riverview Rams beat IMG Academy's junior team with strong sacks and long touchdowns and remain undefeated as they prepare to face Venice.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Week 7 of high school football in Sarasota and Manatee saw standout plays as players like Elidrick Berry rushed 188 yards and Allen Clark made key runs to earn game balls from the Herald-Tribune. The schedule for Week 8 will feature more matchups from Oct. 9 through Oct. 12 — teams will aim to build on these strong performances.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
