  • The Paradise Center reopened at Longboat Island Chapel on Sept. 29 after facing a move from Bay Isles Road. Board president Gail Loefgren and executive director Amy Steinhauser celebrated the homecoming with a ribbon cutting + launched new classes like yoga and Tai Chi in the renovated space.  Observer

  • Sarasota resident Jordan Wenck will debut her gluten-free Beanie Bites dessert mixes at the Farmers Market on Oct. 4—these bean-based products, made with sprouted chickpeas, offer a healthy twist on waffles, muffins, and pancakes. Her growing business started in Lakewood Ranch in March and now expands to Sarasota, reflecting her commitment to health and taste.  Observer
  • Kilwins reopened on St. Armands Circle on Sept. 27 after rebuilding from hurricanes Helene and Milton—offering handmade fudge, ice cream, and other treats to families who have enjoyed the shop for generations.  Observer
  • Dimmitt Automotive Group will convert a high-end auto dealership at 1518 State St. into Bentley Sarasota by January 1, with a service center opening mid 2026 to complete the luxury upgrade — the UK-based brand chose Sarasota for its high-net-worth market.  Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sarasota Players launch an '80s-themed run of The Wedding Singer today at The Crossings at Siesta Key, led by director Jalex Scott with a lively cast featuring bold costumes, catchy hits, and energetic dance numbers — the show will move to Payne Park next year. Local audiences will enjoy a nostalgic celebration of a favorite musical and the spirit of the decade.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gullett Elementary uses a co-teach program where two full-time teachers share classrooms for each grade from first to fifth to support about 30 students — the program started in 2022-23 and offers extra one-on-one time that meets each child's needs.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers plan to redraw congressional district maps mid-decade after Governor Ron DeSantis called for the change and the Florida House set up a special committee. Political scientist Frank Alcock warned that the move could let one party shape maps — hurting fair voting and voter trust.  Sarasota Magazine
  • The roundabout at Ringling Boulevard and Pine Place opened in January and earned the 2025 Transformational Roundabout Corridor/Interchange Project recognition from the International Association of Transportation Engineers. Sarasota Chief Transportation Planner Alvimarie Corales presented the project in a virtual panel discussion with engineers from around the world — an honor that comes as the county government center prepares for redevelopment.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts warn that rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea and advise that on beaches without lifeguards like Longboat Key residents check surf forecasts and watch for a gap in the waves—swimmers should swim parallel to shore to break free from the current. Water rescue teams held training exercises on Sep. 24 to improve their response when rip currents lead to most water rescues.  Observer

  • Families in Sarasota have many indoor fun options on a rainy day as local centers offer skating, bowling, and museum tours. SPORTS NEWS

  • Out-of-Door Academy girls’ golf team won the SSAA title on Sept. 19 at Cleveland Heights Golf Course—five players combined for a 330 while sophomore Brooklyn Cullen earned medalist honors with a 71. The team, mostly made up of players who have competed together since sixth grade, now looks to qualify for the state tournament.  Observer
