COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ingman Marine acquired Cannons Marina on Longboat Key, making it their fourth location, while North Port picked Michael Fuino as city attorney and Irina Kukharenko as finance director. Sarasota officials also honored educators with the Barancik award, named new board members at Visit Sarasota, and announced further appointments and promotions in education, health care and community leadership.  Sarasota Magazine

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The U.S. government took a 10% stake in Intel to boost domestic chip production and support the CHIPS and Science Act. This move gives Intel fresh capital for new fabs and aims to strengthen Florida’s tech and defense sectors—helping secure American innovation.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota Bradenton Airport is turning its North Quad from 110 acres of vacant land into a busy area for private aviation as companies like Sheltair—Roper Technologies, Aircraft Services Hangar Group and Pilatus Aircraft launch new projects. The airport broke ground on a $10 million customs facility that will improve international private flights, boost revenue and create jobs in coming years.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • On September 27th, Temple Emanu-El members gathered at Nathan Benderson Park for the Tashlich ritual—where they tossed bread into the water to cast away sins and start anew in preparation for the High Holy Days.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The New College Foundation will host its 46th annual Clambake on Nov. 6 at New College of Florida’s bayfront campus to raise funds for student scholarships while drawing community leaders, alumni and friends for a night of coastal cuisine, live music and a live auction. Tickets are on sale as the event promises a New England-style feast that supports academic excellence.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Southside Elementary hosted a Go Gold Day rally on Sept. 26 where students wore gold to raise funds and awareness for children with pediatric cancer—supporting the Benjamin Gilkey Fund created in memory of Benjamin Gilkey and Avery Rann.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hermitage Artist Retreat asked Sarasota County to allow repairs for storm damage at its Manasota Key campus, with costs estimated at less than $500k — a request made as talks on conveying the site continue. County officials said repair work may not start for another year while they work to secure FEMA reimbursement.  Observer
  • Sarasota County approved a $2.52 billion budget with spending up 73% as property tax revenues soared and a $210 million HUD grant supported hurricane recovery—Commissioner Tom Knight voted against the plan over concerns about drawing $23 million from county reserves and rising budgets for the sheriff's office and stormwater.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Visit Sarasota County named three new board members from its tourism bureau who will serve two-year terms beginning Oct.1—Cindy Moore, Mark Sherwin and Kim Farrell will replace three departing members.  Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • During inspections done from September 22 to 28, health inspectors flagged 14 local restaurants with high-priority violations—leading to warnings and corrective actions while 20 other restaurants passed with no issues. The review found concerns with food storage and temperature control and prompted follow-up measures for some establishments.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity will build 17 townhomes in the Park East neighborhood on a 1.35-acre parcel at the corner of Aspinwall Street and Rhodes Avenue following City Commission approval on Sept.15. The two-building project will offer single-family homes with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a one-car garage each—designed with the same owner-occupied model used in Habitat’s free-standing homes.  Observer

  • Braden River High lost a five-set match to Venice on Sept. 25, but freshman outside/middle hitter Molly Lynch earned East County Athlete of the Week with 12 kills, 12 digs, and 4 aces. She plans to improve her hitting and footwork this season—working hard to boost her play.  Observer
