- ➤ Ingman Marine will acquire Cannons Marina on Longboat Key, keeping a customer-focused service model and a slightly changed name. - ➤ Kilwins on St. Armands Circle reopens today after a year-long closure from hurricane damage, welcoming customers with a grand event featuring free samples, giveaways, live entertainment, and a refreshed menu that mixes its classic treats with tropical additions — drawing interest from local visitors. - ➤ One year after hurricane Helene, small shops across Sarasota County are repairing damage after storm surge flooded businesses in St. Armands and Venice—owners reported water rising quickly to around 5 feet in one area and nearly 9 feet in another. - ➤ A Sarasota crushing facility operating as US Recycling has been found to list a dead attorney—Alexander Paderewski, who died in 2019—as its registered agent in state filings, with digital signatures from former lawyer Nevin Weiner appearing despite his disassociation. - ➤ Sarasota Orchestra named Grammy-winning conductor Giancarlo Guerrero as its new music director after five years without a leader—he plans to share stories and invite audience participation to bring a fresh, interactive experience to concerts this fall. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tropical Storm Humberto and Tropical Storm Imelda are forecast to come within 900 miles by Monday or Tuesday—and meteorologists say Humberto may strengthen into a major hurricane while Imelda remains a tropical storm, which could lead to rough surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding. ABC 7
- ➤ Forecasters are having difficulty predicting Florida impacts as Hurricane Humberto— which strengthened on September 26 and is forecast to rapidly intensify into a Category 4 storm—may interact with Invest 94L, which is expected to form a tropical depression near the Bahamas this weekend, raising warnings of heavy winds, rain, and storm surge early next week. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Florida court ruled that the ban on openly carrying guns was unconstitutional and that the ruling took effect on Sept. 25, allowing more people to carry guns in public, while private businesses in Sarasota and Manatee may still ask armed customers to leave—upholding their right to enforce no-gun policies.
