COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Goodwill Manasota has expanded its Veterans Services program to all six Community Resource Centers in Sarasota, Bradenton, North Port and Arcadia, offering job search help, career services and referrals for social services to veterans and their families. The program also holds a weekly VA Coffee Social on Tuesdays at the University Parkway center—an effort to help veterans connect with local resources and job opportunities.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • On Sept. 11, Sarasota honored the 24th anniversary of 9/11 with several events. USF Sarasota-Manatee hosted a ceremony at 8:15 a.m.—2,997 American flags were planted while a cleanup at the National Cemetery and a Crunch Fitness stair climb challenge took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  ABC 7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The U.S. Coast Guard is still searching for missing fisherman Brandon Taylor who went overboard off Anclote on Wednesday when a wave hit his boat—a rescue that saved his friend Pete Hans after nearly eight hours in the water when Taylor was last seen around 6:30 a.m.  FOX 13

  • Publix was named in six USA TODAY 10Best lists on Sept.10, including best grocery store, bakery, deli, produce, loyalty program and prepared food—showing strong appeal in Florida and the southeast. The Florida-based chain—founded in 1930 and employee-owned—now operates over 1,400 locations and employs more than 260,000 people.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Concerts in Sarasota and Bradenton present a busy schedule this week — featuring Puerto Rican rapper Hades66 performing today at 8:30 p.m. at Strobes Event Center in Sarasota and Nashville-based Colleen Orender at Fogartyville. Saturday shows include blues-rock guitarist Albert Castiglia at Cottonmouth in Bradenton and local band Ending Apathy at Oscura — with country singer Cooper Alan set to headline a sold-out show at Big Top Live on Sept. 18.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Debbie Durham won best-in-show with her photo 'Peter Pan Into the Light' at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ 45th annual Juried Photo Exhibition—now available in a virtual gallery until Sept. 30. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 23, volunteer snorkelers from the Sarasota Sailing Squadron joined the Great Scallop Search in Sarasota Bay and found about 20 scallops among healthy seagrass beds. Executive Director Ronda Ryan said the low count may signal declining water quality — a concern for local marine life.  Observer
  • Residents in Central Cocoanut say dust and noise from the U.S. Recycling plant have troubled them for many years despite fines and new road work—air quality sensors show high dust levels that may harm health.   • Flags were flown at half-staff yesterday in Florida and across the nation to honor victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and a moment of silence was observed at 8:46 a.m.—Gov. DeSantis signed a proclamation establishing Patriot Week from Sept. 11 to Sept. 17.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • On Sept 9, the Sarasota City Commission chose Sumter Local Government Consulting—whose bid of about $18,000 was less than half the cost of another firm—to help find a new city manager after an 11‑month gap.  Observer
  • Longboat Key town commissioners plan to extend the permit fee waiver for hurricane-related repairs through December as many residents continue rebuilding; the resolution will be voted on at a special meeting on Sept. 22—staff had recommended ending the waiver to conserve funds.  Observer

  • From August 25 through 29, local sellers closed several real estate deals in Sarasota, Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, Osprey and Nokomis—top among them a Harbor Acres home on Vista Drive that sold for $9.28 million. Other transactions ranged from about $525,000 to over $3 million, reflecting a busy market.  Observer

  • Local high school football teams in Sarasota and Manatee counties will compete on Friday, Sept. 12 as previews show matchups like Parrish Community at Palmetto and Sarasota Christian at Cambridge Christian.   • The Sarasota Herald-Tribune named Out-of-Door Academy volleyball player Ella Kwon Girls Athlete of the Week for Aug. 25-30—she won the poll with 35.31% of the vote and recalled a memorable win over Sarasota that highlighted her team’s effort.
