- ➤ Michael's on East, a popular fine-dining restaurant in Sarasota, will close on Sept. 14 for a remodel that will update its old Art Deco style dining rooms, bar, and lounge—while keeping the kitchen and wine cellar open. - ➤ Selby Gardens announced its 2025-2026 programming which will include the Orchid Show by British artist Rebecca Louise Law from Oct. 11-Dec. 7 at the downtown campus—featuring an installation of dried flowers alongside live orchids. The Gardens will also launch a children’s exhibit based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s verses starting Nov. 15 at Historic Spanish Point and a summer show, Flowers and Friendship, with Lynn Goldsmith and Patti Smith from June 20-Sept. 13. - ➤ Florida drivers with Progressive Insurance may soon receive refunds or account credits because the insurer made more profit than allowed over the past three years—state law requires extra funds to be returned to policyholders and checks are expected to be issued later in 2025. Z105
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a Sept. 3 workshop, Manatee County commissioners announced they planned to use extra multimodal fees to complete a 140-mile trail system instead of spending millions to widen roads—because building shared-use paths costs four times less. The finished trail along Bourneside Boulevard will eventually connect to Sarasota’s Legacy Trail as the county shifts from expensive road projects. Observer
- ➤ On Sept 10, a Florida state appeals court ruled that the law banning open-carry was unconstitutional — saying the ban does not match the historical way of understanding gun rights. Gov DeSantis supports ending the ban while some lawmakers and law enforcement have voiced strong opposition. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Sarasota Memorial Hospital was recognized Tuesday for supporting employees in the Armed Forces and received two ESGR Seven Seals Awards during an early ceremony.
