CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Crystal Conley, a DeSoto County woman, was arrested on Sept. 3 for aggravated animal cruelty after she neglected her cat for weeks and asked an animal hospital for advice on amputating its injured leg—deputies found the cat with exposed bone and took it in for urgent care. ABC 7
- ➤ The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men for running an illegal gambling operation at Magic Arcade on Swift Road this week — officers seized 117 slot machines and cash, and both men, reportedly in the country with revoked visas, are now held in jail. ABC Action News

- ➤ Sarasota County Fairgrounds will host the 2026 Thunder by the Bay Music & Motors Festival from Feb. 13 to Feb. 15 where rock bands Night Ranger and .38 Special and country singer Montgomery Gentry will perform. Fans will also see special guest Paul Teutul Jr.—of American Chopper fame—join car and bike shows, charity events, and on-site camping as tickets go on sale Oct. 1. Observer

- ➤ Sarasota County Judge David Denkin retired on Aug 28 after more than 20 years on the bench and as the founder of our DUI Court that has helped 693 graduates achieve low recidivism—his work established the program's strong record with an 83% success rate and 3% recidivism compared to much higher statewide figures. Judge Stephen Walker will now oversee the DUI Court as Denkin is honored for his lasting impact on our judicial system. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
- ➤ On Sept. 2, the Sarasota City Commission reallocated $9.2 million from 15 capital improvement projects to support storm recovery for Hurricane Helene and Milton—this move aims to address $37 million in remaining damage costs. A public hearing for the related amendment is pending and the revised plan will be updated in upcoming budget hearings on Sept. 15. Observer

- ➤ The Florida Health Department in Manatee County lifted its advisory for Palma Sola South beach on Sept. 4 after tests on Sept. 2 showed safe levels of Enterococcus bacteria — the advisory was issued on Aug. 29 when water samples did not meet safety standards ahead of Labor Day weekend.
