ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mote Marine Laboratory opened three new research facilities on August 25—Ron and Marla Wolf Seagrass Restoration Center, Biogeochemical Carbon Sequestration Lab, and Publix Seagrass Genetics Research Hub—in Sarasota to advance studies on resilient seagrass varieties and carbon capture. The laboratory also set up a new land-based research site at Bahia Honda State Park in the Keys to boost marine restoration and public outreach. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Sarasota County commissioners met on Aug. 26 to propose renaming a section of U.S. Highway 41 for rock legend Dickey Betts, pending state approval. The tribute will honor Betts' deep ties to the area and his legacy with the Allman Brothers Band—though the exact stretch of road has not yet been decided. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
