ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 5-year-old girl playing near a culvert on Bahia Vista Street was swept into a storm drain after a water main break caused a strong current — she died on Aug 28 after being taken from Sarasota Memorial Hospital to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Jefferson Fit, a downtown Sarasota gym, is moving to a bigger 12,000 sq ft location near Sprouts that will open early October — the move comes after Mira Mar Plaza redevelopment and will add recovery amenities, an outdoor fitness space, and pickleball courts; the gym will keep operating at its current site until the new facility is ready. - ➤ Nokomis business owner Todd A. Hoch was arrested on 27 felony counts for construction fraud after taking payments from over 30 victims for window and door fix-ups that were never completed or later led to liens—he is held at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility. ABC 7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Pops Orchestra of Bradenton and Sarasota is marking its 50th season by expanding its schedule with extra weekend concerts and special tribute events that will feature rock, country and pop music. Conductor Robyn L. Bell, now working full-time for the group, said the new lineup will include a Veterans’ Day salute and a holiday program at Manatee High School—drawing more local audiences.
