ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A young child was pulled into a drainage system by strong water flow from a water main break on Bahia Vista Street — the child was rescued and taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital while traffic was closed between Honore Avenue and Aracadia Avenue.  ABC Action News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Art Center Sarasota is getting ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year with exhibitions, community workshops, and special events—one of which is a revival of the Beaux Arts Ball on March 21 at the Municipal Auditorium. Executive director Katherine Ceaser, who took over in December, said the centennial celebration will highlight the center’s long history of making art accessible to everyone.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota County officials projected a $37.8 million shortfall by 2028 as the sheriff's budget has nearly doubled since 2020, making it the largest expense. Commissioners expressed concerns and will hold public hearings on Sept.10 to set stricter spending limits amid rising costs for personnel, benefits, and technology — urging tighter fiscal oversight.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
