ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Six endangered lemur infants were born this season at the Lemur Conservation Foundation reserve in Myakka City; collared brown lemur twins arrived in April, red ruffed triplets were born in May, and an endangered ring-tail lemur was born in June. The foundation works with conservation programs to shield lemurs from extinction—more than 98% of species face this threat.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Venice Planning Commission will review two northeast Venice development plans on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.—one for the 60-home Cassata Oaks development with conditions to protect the Fox Lea Farm Equestrian Center and one for Phase 2 of Vistera that adds 190 single-family homes. A public hearing on a self-storage facility near Interstate 75 and Jacaranda Boulevard is also set to follow.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • The Sarasota Herald-Tribune unveiled its The Fab 15 list of top high school volleyball players for 2025—15 standout athletes from Sarasota-Manatee counties following a season with eight teams in the playoffs.   • Today, 155 Special Olympics athletes gathered at Nathan Benderson Park for the Stand Up Paddle Competition, including competitors from Manatee County. Coach Mark Flanagan praised the athletes' dedication, courage and joy—an inspiring display of their competitive spirit.  Observer
