  • The Paradise Center is closing after Aug.22 to prepare for its move from 546 Bay Isles Road to Longboat Island Chapel at 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive. It will reopen Sept.29—programs will run until the center closes.  Observer
  • A new running club launched on Longboat Key for residents to get moving, meeting every Saturday at 7 a.m. at Sips coffee shop—participants follow a three-mile route designed to avoid sidewalk construction and enjoy a post-run coffee.  Observer

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle fire closed I-275 & Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Aug. 13, causing delays for motorists as crews worked to control the incident.  ABC 7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin is strengthening today and is forecast to become a hurricane by today or early Friday — it is expected to reach Category 3 on August 17 with 115 mph winds — as forecasters urge Florida residents to monitor weather updates. The storm’s exact track remains uncertain, and officials advise vigilance for possible impacts along the coast.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
