CreArte Latino Cultural Center held its eighth birthday fundraiser on Aug 9 in its new Northgate Boulevard space to showcase Latino and Hispanic culture in Sarasota — the event included dancing, crafts, food, and a chance for donations to be matched by an anonymous $5,000 gift.
The Education Foundation of Sarasota County awarded 82 scholarships to high school students for the 2024—25 school year, including 44 through its new Future-Ready Scholars program.
The program helps students overcome barriers to college and prepares them for life after high school with support from donations and philanthropic organizations.
Tropical Storm Erin is moving quickly west and is expected to strengthen soon into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season later this week (with winds of at least 111 mph possible if it becomes a major hurricane).
Officials urge Florida residents to monitor the storm and prepare for potential impacts.
The CDC reported that the deadliest animal is the mosquito as it spreads diseases such as West Nile virus, and the Florida Department of Health said more than 80 types of mosquitoes are found in the state.
Residents are advised to remove standing water from items around homes—such as bird baths and flower vases—to reduce mosquito breeding.
