- ➤ The Barancik Foundation approved $8,154,945 in grants for nonprofits in Sarasota—this funding included $1 million for a new Boys & Girls Club in Newtown, improved access to prenatal care, and affordable housing for teachers. The awards brought the foundation’s total grantmaking to over $23 million, supporting projects in education, health, housing, arts, environment and climate adaption. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Claire’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and said it may close 1,119 stores if it cannot find a buyer soon, putting three Suncoast locations near Sarasota at risk. The company said low foot traffic, high rent and strong competition are behind its decision. Sarasota Herald-Tribune

- ➤ Tropical Storm Erin has formed today with organized thunderstorms and gusts near 45 mph+ it is moving west at 20 mph. Forecast models say it could grow into a major hurricane later if it enters warmer waters, though its track remains uncertain. ABC 7
- ➤ The National Hurricane Center said Invest 97L is moving west across the Atlantic and is expected to develop into a tropical depression or storm by midweek — AccuWeather forecasts it may strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane by Aug. 16 while turning north.
