Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 11th of August.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Longboat Island Chapel members delivered lunch to Longboat Key firefighters on July 31 and to police officers on Aug. 5 as a thank you for their service — the meal included Publix subs, snacks, and homemade desserts. Observer
- ➤ Since Hurricane Helene struck on Sept. 27, 2024, Buttonwood Harbour residents on Longboat Key have taken different approaches—some like BJ Bishop are demolishing their homes to rebuild on higher ground while others such as John Wegman quickly restored their houses and finished remodeling by January. Neighbors are choosing to rebuild, return, or sell as they adjust to the storm's lasting impact. Observer
- ➤ SRQ Strong hosted a trauma-informed community development workshop from July 30 to Aug.-1 at The Academy at Glengary where Pastor Paul Abernathy and his wife Kristina led 35 local residents and representatives of 26 organizations in a block-by-block assessment of Newtown’s needs. The project - which is funded by partners including BayFirst and Dreamer’s Academy - aims to build community resources and eventually establish the Newtown Family Center. Observer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Sarasota County Fire Department hosted this month's open house at Station 5 on 400 N. Beneva Road where a Bayflite medical helicopter landed—opening its doors for public tours—and visitors met firefighters and viewed demonstrations on fire safety and CPR. The event also featured apparatus displays and car seat inspections—key parts of the community outreach intended to improve emergency readiness. Observer
- ➤ A city project to replace 1,500 linear feet of sea wall fronting Bayfront Park and affecting the A Dock area of the marina received partial sign‑off from the Development Review Committee on Aug. 7—aimed at raising the wall cap and landward grade for improved resiliency. The plan will also add environmental panels to filter water after past hurricane damage exposed weaknesses in the seawall. Observer
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Sarasota rent prices fell 5% compared to last July and dropped another 1.6% since June — the median rent is a bit over $1,300 for a one-bedroom and about $1,400 for a two-bedroom unit. The report shows a steady decline in rental costs from January to July 2025 as a higher supply of apartments and affordable housing efforts help lower prices. Sarasota Herald-Tribune
