Local organizations partnered Saturday at the Sarasota City YMCA to give more than 700 free backpacks, school supplies, and bike safety lessons for kids heading back to school.
The event also featured haircuts, virtual reality games, and community support from the police and local companies.
Volunteers from Longboat Island Chapel hosted a thank-you lunch on Thursday for police and firefighters at the Longboat Island Police station.
The event, part of a five-year tradition, featured sandwiches, desserts and iced tea and honored Chief Russ Mager's first anniversary since he began serving on Aug. 4.

The 1.59-acre former Denny’s at 3701 Bee Ridge Road closed for $4.25 million and will be renovated into multiple storefronts including a drive-thru — investment firm Rich Global plans to bring new brands to the area with future tenants yet to be named.
