- ➤ Thirty Bear Defenders gathered along Sarasota Bayfront on August 9 to protest a potential planned black bear hunt in Florida, saying that changing from bear check stations to no check stations with packs of dogs and bow hunting may cause a long, painful death. They will attend a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting on August 13th and 14th at 8:30 a.m.—held at the Public Safety Institute in Havana—to demand more transparency on the hunt plans. - ➤ Developers of the brownfield Marian Anderson property in Sarasota took a step before the Development Review Committee to rezone 9.2 acres for light industrial use and a health care clinic next. The Newtown Gateway group—led by Barron Channer and local partners—intends to purchase the site for $50,000 from the city and will begin environmental cleanup when the City Commission approves the rezoning.
