Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 5th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A $100,000 bequest from the Bredemeyer estate supports Mayor’s Feed the Hungry Program to help households facing food insecurity in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The gift allows the program to meet immediate needs and invest in future food security—benefiting community children and families.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sarasota Bradenton International Airport opened three new places to eat in Terminal B this summer - Mattison’s Restaurant, Huey Magoo’s chicken, and the Salty Key Bar, with two more food spots soon to be built. The airport also named Paul Hoback as its new president and CEO starting Oct. 19 while current CEO Rick Piccolo will retire Nov. 30.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Dexter formed off North Carolina on Aug. 3—its path keeps it well offshore so Sarasota is not expected to experience tropical storm impacts. Forecasts show the storm will gradually weaken and become post-tropical by Wednesday.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

FINANCE NEWS

  • A federal tax reform known as the Big Beautiful Bill passed on July 3 and brought new tax credits, deductions, and retirement planning options that reduced tax burdens for business owners, parents, and retirees in Florida. A local couple with significant brokerage and retirement assets saved over $4,400 in taxes thanks to measures like extended child tax credits and expanded Roth IRA options — changes that will shape future financial strategies.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Publix has recalled its Cheddar & Herb Biscuits — sold before August 1 — because soy allergens were not listed on the label, so customers with soy allergies should discard them or return them for a refund.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Herald-Tribune reviewed 14 state championship teams from our area and a poll named the 2023 Cardinal Mooney team as the best, receiving 34.45 percent of the vote.
