Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Emerald Sands wrote a book with their life stories to build lasting friendships and show their community culture during the pandemic. They meet weekly — sharing meals, cards, and bike rides — to keep their bonds strong.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local arts leaders will hold a discussion on the impact of arts and culture on Aug. 7 at Michael’s On East while Selby Gardens invites photo submissions from Aug. 4-11 as part of its 45th annual Juried Photographic Exhibition and Friends of the Jacaranda Library recently awarded $2,000 in scholarships to two high school graduates. Pine View senior Allie Chung is attending ALA Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. and Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church hosts today’s Piano Friends recital at 1:30 p.m. — additional fall rehearsals are planned for the Sarasota Jewish Chorale.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Gov. DeSantis's proposal to transfer The Ringling Museum from FSU to New College led donors to pull over $750,000 in planned gifts due to concerns over New College's ability to manage the museum's finances and operations—donors said the measure's failure in the state budget has eased fears for now but they remain vigilant to ensure the museum stays under FSU control.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 25, 2025, a Seminole County homeowner captured video of a three-legged alligator calmly roaming his Astor Farms backyard & the resilient gator showed it could adapt well despite its missing limb. Officials advise people to avoid approaching injured wildlife.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota will spend $1.7 million from park impact fees to improve Bobby Jones Golf Club’s nature park — adding trails, signage, a micro forest, a boardwalk, overlooks, and pedestrian connections. The project follows the 2022 conversion of nearly 100 acres of the golf course into a park — a move designed to benefit local wildlife and residents.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Rex Jensen—CEO of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch—met with about 100 Lakewood Ranch residents at Town Hall to gather input on a planned roundabout at the intersection of Legacy Boulevard, Deer Drive and University Parkway as many locals oppose it. Commissioner Bob McCann said he will ask the commission to pull funding at the July 31 budget meeting while residents worry that the design may hinder pedestrian traffic.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Walmart bought 22 acres on Laurel Road in Venice for $20.8 million from LQ Commercial in May, setting the stage for the city’s first Walmart store near Laurel Nokomis School and Sarasota Memorial Hospital—future plans include phased development across the state.
