ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Liu of USF College of Marine Science said a study found a pressure point in the Gulf—created by a weak loop current that trapped warm water on the West Florida Shelf—may help forecasters better predict hurricane strength, noting it contributed to Hurricane Ian’s rapid intensification in 2022. He explained that this year’s cooler waters reduce the chance for strong storms and that the finding could lead to more accurate forecasts to improve community safety. Z105
- ➤ Sarasota County's Myakka River, once championed by local leaders and a late state senator, now may gain national protection as Rep. Greg Steube sponsored a January bill to upgrade 34 miles to a Wild and Scenic River.
