Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bishop-Parker Foundation gifted Farmhouse Animal and Nature Sanctuary $50,000 to repair hurricane damage to its perimeter fence and other structures in Myakka City. The Burns plan to begin repairs next week with volunteer help—efforts that will restore tours and allow more space for their animals after damage from Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Milton.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota City Commission voted 4—1 on Monday to deny a request to rezone 1701 and 1715 N. Tamiami Trail for a 58-unit apartment project delayed by multiple challenges. Residents of The Strand raised concerns over flooding and potential impacts on their property.  Observer
  • Local leaders recommend the governor form a commission to decide the long-term structure for Ringling, New College and USF — the plan seeks to address enrollment growth, campus upgrades and clearer leadership roles. The proposal aims to create a unified direction for these institutions amid ongoing changes.  Observer
  • On July 21, the Sarasota City Commission unanimously approved staff recommendations to clarify the vacation rental ordinance after learning it does not cover all neighborhoods in mixed-use zones (such as Gillespie Park). Vice Mayor Debbie Trice said staff will study possible neighborhood-specific changes and report their findings by the end of the year to improve renter safety and neighborhood peace.  Observer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Researchers confirmed that only 22 Sears kit homes remain in Florida, built from 1908 to 1942 and found in cities like Sarasota and Jacksonville—these homes were rarely sold in Florida due to shipping logistics and the challenge of including basements. Homeowners with older properties can check for stamped numbers on lumber and shipping labels to verify if their home is a Sears kit.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
