  • The Bradentucky Bombers will hold an open house on July 24 at Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex for those interested in joining the roller derby team, while the Women’s Resource Center received an $85,000 grant to expand services and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe secured a $150,000 three-year grant to support local theater programs. CRIME NEWS

  • Manatee County prosecutors charged Damien Jarmard Garvin with first-degree premeditated murder in the 2017 killing of a hotel clerk and security guard at Zota Beach Resort on Longboat Key—he was arrested in Palmetto on July 10 and was already serving time for a 2020 murder conviction.  Observer

  • The Sarasota Jewish Theatre will launch a new play reading series this summer to showcase three new works with Jewish themes at 7:30 p.m. on July 21, August 4 and August 11 at the Sarasota Players theatre at 3501 S. Tamiami Trail. The series includes 'Observant,' which follows a family coping after a temple shooting, 'Time Will Tell,' inspired by a Yiddish story about imperfect love, and 'A Black and White Cookie,' which follows an unlikely friendship between a newsstand owner and a longtime customer — all set to bring fresh artistic voices to the community.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists discovered a new type of cell in Burmese pythons' intestines that helps the invasive snakes digest entire skeletons of large prey—this mechanism controls calcium absorption from bones.
