ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on I-75 northbound near River Road at MM-189 blocked one lane and caused delays of over 25 minutes, backing up traffic nearly 8 miles during the morning rush.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Police report that vacant vacation homes on St. Armands and Lido Keys have been used for unauthorized house parties and illegal occupancy, with a 19-year-old arrested for burglary after damaging a door on July 2 — authorities urge homeowners to secure their properties as summer continues.  Observer
  • On July 16th, Sarasota police arrested nearly 40 suspects and seized dozens of guns — including stolen and shooting-linked firearms — along with various pounds of illegal drugs during Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. III to curb violent crime in the city.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thanks to local donors, the Manatee Community Foundation has awarded nearly $265,000 in scholarships to 96 students for the 2025-26 academic year; the program supports degrees from associate to doctorate (and helps first-generation and financially challenged students balance family responsibilities) across the county.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Sarasota County Schools is preparing a $748 million budget for the 2025-26 school year that prioritizes keeping class sizes small by including teacher raises and funding for the new Skye Ranch School—officials said the district plans to freeze new hires and cut spending to handle lower state and federal funding.  Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sarasota City Commission voted on July 7 to reopen lease negotiations with MarineMax instead of approving its 25-year extension proposal starting in 2037. MarineMax had planned to invest $11 million in repairs for the storm-damaged marina on City Island, and the city will now negotiate a new lease based on an updated fair market appraisal—aligning with standard lease practices.  Observer

  • Two new pet venues have opened in the Rosemary District as Katy’s Cat Café offers a dual experience with a beverage service and a cat lounge for $20 + membership with eight adoptions so far, while Dog Bar Sarasota began a soft opening with limited hours and a scheduled full opening on Saturday, July 19.
