COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Exchange awarded $450,000 to 26 local arts and cultural organizations and 11 students today while the Tidewell Foundation received a $350,000 grant to support Empath LIFE, a program that helps seniors. CareerEdge, the Women’s Resource Center, Parenting Matters, Farmhouse Animal and Nature Sanctuary, the Florida Center for Early Childhood, Caldwell Trust Company, and the Sarasota County Fire Department also were granted funds that will boost workforce training, mental health care, family services, repairs, early learning, and public safety across our region — these awards underline ongoing community support and development.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Mayors’ Feed the Hungry is a volunteer-run program that helps families in need across Sarasota and Manatee by collecting non-perishable food and gift cards. The organization will continue its year-round drives and expand its services to help socially isolated individuals while quickly responding to local emergencies — a grassroots effort to end hunger in the community.  Sarasota Magazine
  • Sarasota-based Dickinson and Gibbons partners Deborah J. Blue, Gary H. Larsen, and Jeffrey D. Peairs were named Florida Super Lawyers and Jesse R. Butler was honored as a Florida Rising Star, recognizing their high professional achievement. A new charitable foundation honoring AIDS advocate Susan Terry was launched on July 1 to support individuals affected by HIV — Goodwill Manasota received a three-year United Way Suncoast grant for financial literacy training while Manatee County Clerk Angel Colonneso was recognized for excellence.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • The Florida Department of Transportation reported that a motor vehicle accident blocked two left lanes near mile marker 210 on Fruitville Road in Sarasota — crews worked to clear the scene and no injuries were reported.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Florida Studio Theatre’s play 'Dorothy’s Dictionary' is running at the Keating Theatre until Aug. 10 — the intimate production follows librarian Dorothy and teen Zan as they build a bond in a nursing center room through sharing books.  Sarasota Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida's citrus industry recorded its lowest production since the 1919-1920 season with 14.52 million boxes produced—down 28.5% from last season and 75% lower than five years ago. The decline, worsened by citrus greening disease and Hurricane Milton's impact in October 2024, led the Legislature to approve $124.5 million for support including planting disease-resistant trees.  Z105

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sarasota schools start on Aug. 11 as most Florida counties begin classes then while new rules ban cell phone use during lessons in elementary and middle schools and only allow controlled use in high schools. A month-long tax holiday on school supplies runs from Aug. 1—Aug. 31.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • Local voters awarded the 1995 Cardinal Mooney softball team 42.76% of the vote in a poll comparing Sarasota-Manatee fast-pitch teams—this team recorded a 30-5 season and clinched a state title with a 3-0 win.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
