BUSINESS NEWS

  • California-based jewelry brand Gorjana opened its new store at University Town Center on July 1; Sarasota resident Jacqueline Dinatale said the shop offers trendy, affordable charm necklaces for a personalized shopping experience—store manager Taylor Lingreen said the company aims to bring its California chic style to Sarasota while supporting local nonprofits.  Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Gulf Coast Community Foundation awarded a $150,000 grant to CareerEdge to support fast-track training programs and on-the-job training under the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce initiative. The funding will boost workforce skills and strengthen local industry partnerships in Sarasota.  Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sarasota school district is moving forward with several construction projects as the new school year nears, including the new Skye Ranch School that will open soon, a sports field house renovation at Booker High, updates at Sarasota High, and a high school in Wellen Park underway. Other projects include expanding McIntosh Middle’s farm, replacing Garden Elementary after Hurricane Ian, and starting a new elementary in Lakewood Ranch next year+ officials say these upgrades will help the district meet changing enrollment needs.  Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, a slow-moving tropical swirl is crossing Florida and may become a weak low in the Gulf by Tuesday. The system is expected to bring heavy rain and possible isolated flooding—especially in areas with poor drainage.  ABC 7

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Dog Bar Sarasota, housed in the historic Ice House on 10th St., is set to open Saturday, July 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. with a foamy party for dogs and their people; the new owners will offer a fresh food menu and cocktails — with donations from the event going to Donte’s Den Animal Sanctuary — after its January closing.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

  • On July 13th, the Minnesota Twins selected Wake Forest shortstop Marek Houston with the 16th overall pick in the MLB Draft, making him Venice High’s highest-ever selection (Baseball America had projected his pick) (his milestone ties him with top local draft picks).  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Readers in Sarasota are invited to vote for the best all-time state champion baseball squad from the area, which has won 25 FHSAA titles since 1922—teams include Manatee High, Sarasota High, Venice and Riverview High.
