Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of July.
Good morning, Sarasota.
Venice Theatre has brought back its SummerStock program after a two-year pause caused by Hurricane Ian damage and will present the Tony Award-winning musical 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' at the Pinkerton Theatre from July 18–August 3.
The program targets high school and college students and comes with a $350,000 state grant meant for building repairs—helping restore the venue for future events.
Officials at Sarasota County Jail have struggled with overcrowding for more than a decade as deputies add extra cots and mattresses to cells designed for fewer inmates—especially in the west wing built in 1975.
The facility also includes an east wing built in 1987 and a north wing built in 2002 for program housing, yet the sheriff’s office continues to face space challenges in its aging facility.
