- ➤ Beef 'O' Brady's is hosting its second supply drive for Tara Elementary teachers to cover classroom supplies they usually pay for themselves, and community members can donate items until July 31. The restaurant shows 48 wish lists as ornaments—donors earn rewards and could win free wings at the Aug. 4 luncheon. Observer
- ➤ The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Board of Trustees has elected Katherine Martucci as chair and Jeannie Russell as vice chair for the 2026 fiscal year—three new board members were also appointed, and the board will begin Phase Two of its Master Plan with a groundbreaking ceremony later this year. - ➤ Avelo Airlines announced on July 9 that it will extend its East Coast flight schedule until mid-February 2026 — adding service to 11 Florida airports including Sarasota/Bradenton. The Houston-based carrier recently canceled some Daytona Beach routes due to low demand and faces protests over its plan to transport detained immigrants for deportation — a move the CEO said would secure more than 1,100 jobs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Sarasota said work will begin on Lido Key's beach renourishment project after October 31—$12 million in federal funds will restore sand lost to storms and improve boat navigation in New Pass. The project will finish by early 2026 and then a new effort will plant sea oats to rebuild the dunes. FOX 13

- ➤ State Rep Fiona McFarland introduced a law that lets pregnant women apply for a temporary handicap parking permit valid for one year. The law went into effect on July 1 and requires a doctor's signature with form HSMV 83040 submitted to the Florida Department of Safety and Motor Vehicles at a fee of $15. ABC 7

- ➤ A veterinary study in Sarasota-Manatee is inviting dog owners to have their pets screened if they show signs of severe thunderstorm aversion at sites including Bayshore Animal Hospital and Brandt Veterinary Clinic. The study offers free evaluations, testing, and medication and will submit findings to the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine later this year—aiming to bring a new treatment to market. - ➤ Sarasota Memorial Hospital orthopedic surgeons began using the TMINI Miniature Robotic System in select knee replacement cases this week to improve bone preparation and implant placement. The system, which uses pre-operative CT scans to guide surgery, will be used by additional surgeons in coming months — following FDA clearance in 2023 and integration with Zimmer Biomet’s Persona Knee System approved in 2024.
