Good morning, Sarasota. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Sarasota Police officers rescued an unconscious woman from a burning car after a three-car crash in late June — released body camera footage shows the critical moment of the rescue.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarasota city and county have tasked staff with drafting ordinances to ban beaching and mooring motorized boats and personal watercraft within 300 feet of South Lido Beach, Ted Sperling Park, Centennial Park and other waterfront sites—measures that come amid rising safety concerns and resident complaints following a fatal watercraft accident. The proposals also target non-licensed commercial operators to help protect local parks and public safety.  Observer
  • A new Florida law now lets pregnant women apply for a one-year handicap parking placard by submitting Form HSMV 83040, signed by a licensed physician, to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The permit costs $15 and is designed to ease physical strain during pregnancy — although some worry that the available handicap spaces may not meet rising demand.  Z105
  • At a July 7 meeting, the Sarasota City Commission chose three executive search firms—MGT Impact Solutions, Sumpter Local Government Consulting, and Slavin Management Consultants—to find a city manager after Marlon Brown retired in October. The three firms will soon send in their proposals while the city prepares to hold public interviews as part of the continued search.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Assistant County Administrator Mark Cunningham resigned on Wednesday and will leave his post on July 31 after 13 years of service amid anger over the county's failed stormwater system — county officials have begun changes including forming a new stormwater department to fix these issues.  ABC 7
  • Florida governor Ron DeSantis allowed three bills to become law without his signature under the state Constitution. The bills extend non-compete durations for high earners, require state insurance to cover fertility preservation for workers with cancer, and secure compensation for Mande Penney-Lemmon after a Sarasota County incident—they took effect on July 1 and July 3.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County said the water quality at North Lido Beach at 50 Benjamin Franklin Drive is unsafe for swimming after tests on July 7 showed Enterococcus bacteria levels above safe limits — the advisory will last until the water meets state guidelines.  Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marek Houston, a Venice High grad who now plays shortstop at Wake Forest, is projected to be a top-20 pick in the MLB Draft on July 13—his strong season raised his draft ranking. Another prospect, third baseman Eddie Zaun, could also have his name called during the draft.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune
