- ➤ Braden River High’s Black Pearls shined at the Universal Dance Association Summer Camp in Tampa, earning the Camp Leadership award, Superior ratings for their Level 4 Hip Hop routine and All-America Dancer status for seven members. De Soto National Memorial Park has reopened after hurricane damage with trails, bathrooms and a staffed visitor tent while local high school seniors also excelled at the SCF Math ACES competition. - ➤ North Port City Hall staff discovered three baby raccoons wandering outside on Thursday and called the Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida—an animal hospital in Venice—to rescue and rehabilitate them for eventual release. The animals received safe care and will be returned to the wild when ready. ABC 7

- ➤ Venice Marine Patrol patrolled Suncoast waters today while master officer Paul Joyce advised boaters to take the U.S. Coast Guard course, check tides and weather, and mind their drinks—captains must ensure the safety of their guests. ABC 7
- ➤ Sarasota County leaders proposed a budget for fiscal year 2026 that will exceed $2.5 billion as nearly every department requested more funding, including a 47% boost for the sheriff’s office. County projections warn spending will outpace revenue if property taxes and home values do not keep rising + deficits deepen in coming years. ABC 7
- ➤ About 200 people attended a nonpartisan rally on Saturday morning July 5 along South Bayfront Drive, hosted by the League of Women Voters to empower voters and defend democracy.
