Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of July.
Good morning, Sarasota.
Venice police arrested Julie Faith Cornwall from Nokomis on DUI, fleeing, and resisting arrest charges after they found her asleep in her running Toyota in the parking lot on June 29 — she drove off when officers knocked on her window and ignored stop sticks until stopping near Venice City Hall where officers forced entry into her car and administered field sobriety tests — and she was then taken into custody.
The Florida Department of Transportation opened the new Legacy Trail bike and pedestrian bridge over Clark Road on July 2 to give safer passage for trail users ahead of the holiday.
The $13.2 million project—built to replace dangerous surface crosswalks—is part of ongoing improvements along the 18.5-mile trail that follows a historic railroad route.
Canadian urbanist Brent Toderian visited Sarasota in February and said the new condo towers focus on luxury living instead of meeting local residents' needs.
