COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Safe Children Coalition’s Achievers program honored local high school graduates at USF Sarasota-Manatee Selby Auditorium by awarding 20 scholarships worth $23,500 while offering continuing support to at-risk students, and the Senior Friendship Centers received a grant to expand caregiver services. The coalition is also hosting its annual Back-to-School Drive to supply nearly 500 children, and Selby Gardens will hold its Fourth of July All-American Cookout from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.  Sarasota Herald-Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida will start more than 100 new laws on July 1 that ban fluoride in water, raise animal cruelty penalties and limit school phone use for some students. Other laws will protect parks from commercial projects, ease condo fees and change boating rules — maps will be updated to show the Gulf of America.  Z105
  • Florida lawmakers permanently removed the sales tax on hurricane supplies — items such as batteries, smoke detectors, portable generators, and life jackets are now tax-free year-round. The state budget also approved two tax holidays — one every August for back-to-school gear including school supplies and computers up to fifteen hundred dollars, and another from September through December for outdoor equipment like tents, fishing rods, and camping lanterns.  Z105
  • Residents in Sarasota County are anxious as the Phillippi Creek dredging project was reclassified to a standard permit, which may delay work up to eight months and heighten flood risks during heavy rains. County officials and the Army Corps of Engineers are working to speed up the review + address community concerns ahead of storm season.  FOX 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarasota Memorial Hospital now uses HipInsight 2.0 to show 3D images over the hip during surgery — the system helps Dr. Edward Stolarski plan custom implants and lower risks in over 100 hip replacements, and many patients may go home the same day.  Observer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lazy Lobster hosted its annual Thanksgiving in June on June 26 to offer a turkey feast and collect nonperishable food donations, partnering with Meals on Wheels Plus and All Faiths Food Bank. Guests who donated up to five items earned $10 in Lobster Loot while the restaurant expects to fill about three bins worth of donations to support local food banks during the summer.  Observer
